Around the Island  Britain in a hundred days

Stan Lester

Around the Island is the story of a sailing voyage around Britain during the spring and summer of 2005. Starting at Dartmouth it calls in at traditional fishing harbours, busy yachting centres, bustling holiday resorts, secluded lochs and the cities of Aberdeen, Newcastle and Ipswich before returning to the River Dart a hundred days and nearly two thousand miles later. It includes the stories of Starry Gazy Pie and the Blind Piper of Gairloch, the Cod War and the decline of the fishing industry, the drowning of the sixteen cities of the Cantre'r Gwaelod and the last days of the West Coast puffers.  Around the Island is highly readable from a non-sailing perspective, while containing enough information to be useful to anyone planning a similar voyage.
